The war
A sour issue, but understandably something people may worry about.
Not everyone would go to a country that is recovering from a 25 year war. However, even before the war ended in the spring of 2009 volunteers had been coming on responsible holidays to Sri Lanka for years.
No organisation organising volunteer placements would put any of its clients anywhere near danger and will make certain that volunteers are well informed about places that are off-limits.
The responsible holiday projects we offer are all in safe areas. The project areas around Kurunegala, Colombo and Galle are very safe as is most of Sri Lanka.
Tourist destinations are also very safe and except for a number of checkpoints you won’t even notice that the country used to be at war.
We do however recommend that you wait exploring the North of the country for another couple of years due to remains of the war which may have been left behind such as ammunition and landmines.
