Kumari pre-school

Kumari pre-school children might soon lose their school unless you helpKumari pre-school, a Montessori, has been teaching children for the past 25 years. The pre-school is located near Kurunegala, in one of the rural areas of Sri Lanka and educates around 35 to 38 five year olds each year.

It is a very popular school, not only due to the wealth of teaching experience but also because it is the only pre-school in an 8 kilometre radius of the village.

The school is also one of the cheapest. Its fees remained near enough the same over the past 25 years (Rs250.- or £1.30 per student per month).

Renovation is needed to save this pre-school. Dark class room, poor ventilation, no proper toilet.....Imminent closure.
Sadly permanent closure is threatening the school. Local authorities visited the premises recently and declared it unfit to remain open.

An ultimatum was issued to meet the health & safety standards before the end of 2009 or the school will be closed.

The school is in desperate need of major renovation. The roof is falling apart, the class room has no proper ventilation and is dark, the kids have no proper toilet and the list of health and safety issues goes on and on.
