Teaching project
English is extremely important in many 3rd world countries.
Chances on finding a good job improve significantly when a person speaks English.
Can you imagine that there are companies where you must actually speak English just to come for a job interview?
Speaking English does more! It opens the door to a whole new world, a world rapidly conquering the homes of the Sri Lankan people, both rich and poor: the internet.
The internet provides a wealth of information, an amazing opportunity to learn, learn about different cultures, different disciplines, find new ideas and so much more.
But without English the door to this world is left near shut.
English education in Sri Lanka
Children in Sri Lanka are taught English when they are still young.
In the rural areas it is very difficult to find trained English language teachers hence many teachers are unqualified to teach the language.
As people recognize all too well the importance of English you can imagine how eager both local teachers and children are to be in the presence of a foreigner who brings a wealth of English language knowledge.
Conversational English
For most it is especially the conversational English that is hardest to learn. There usually isn’t anyone to learn from or have a good English conversation with.
Having English speaking volunteers is a unique chance for teachers to better their English and experience different teaching methods. For the children it is the greatest opportunity they will ever have to a better future.
How do we provide aid on this project?
As LEO Project Foundation we mainly provide volunteers to help teach conversational English.
This is done by standing in front of a class and teach the old fashioned way, but also by using singing, dancing, arts, games and sports to engage in conversational English.
Some schools are extremely poor and LEO may provide material aid when required. This would consist of teaching materials, chalk, pens, paper etc.
What you can do to help
You as an individual can make a huge impact and book your place as a volunteer or sponsor the foundation. Read more on volunteering for the teaching project here. Find out how to sponsor here.
