Preschool Teaching Assistant

Work as a teaching assistant in a small preschool dedicated to educating young children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Many children in Sri Lanka come from low income and socially disadvantaged homes, meaning they do not have access to appropriate schooling during their formative years. This project works with a small preschool teaching students from the local community, who would otherwise have no opportunity for education. The money from the project fees goes directly to the preschool for educational supplies and a small salary for the teacher.

Ages range from 3½ to 6 years old, with some staying on at the preschool even up to the ages of 8. These children have no other accessible education or money to attend a fee paying school. In the future we plan to expand the size of the preschool and give more children the chance of a better start in life.

A Typical Day

School starts at 8am with registration and class runs until 11.45am. During the morning you will help the children with all kinds of activities; reading and writing, art, music, exercise and English language. Not only is education vital to these children, but preschool teaches them social skills and how to interact with their peers in a formal environment.

After lunch, you are encouraged to plan your lessons for the following day. Occasionally, some of the preschoolers will stay on for the afternoon and you may like to help with the extra class. Another great option is to invite local high school students in for a language class once their school finishes at 3pm. This is an informal conversational class and a good opportunity to meet older children, learn about life in Sri Lanka and give them the chance to practice their English and maybe help them with their homework!

On days when there is no afternoon class, you are free to explore Colombo.

Accommodation and Food

Accommodation is on the first floor of the preschool and you will share it with other volunteers on the project. Rooms are shared with other volunteers of the same gender. All bunk beds have clean mosquito nets and the linen is changed weekly. We have western style toilets, a washing machine and wifi.

  • Breakfast is typically a selection of local fruit, toast, eggs, tea and coffee.
  • Lunch is local vegetables cooked in Sri Lankan style, served with rice, with optional fish and eggs.
  • Dinner is a choice of Sri Lankan Hoppers, String Hoppers, Kothu or Noodles.
  • We happily cater for volunteers with specific dietary requirements.
