Learn about Buddhism and practice meditation in the peace of the temple grounds, whilst teaching English to monks.

A Typical Day

Although the monks start their day at 5am, you will arrive at the temple for 8am and start your day with meditation. If you haven't meditated before, there is nothing to worry about as the monks are more than happy to teach you. If you are not keen on meditating, sitting quietly in the dim light of the Budha Madura and soaking in the atmosphere is still a beautiful experience.

After meditation you will help the monks clean the temple grounds of fallen leaves and flowers. This is in itself a relaxing exercise and you should take the opportunity to slow down and savour the moment. After the grounds are clean, this is the chance to sit down with the older monks for an informal English conversation class.

You will join the monks for their main meal of the day at 11.30am. This is a dhana; offerings of food, cooked by the local community. After lunch, you might like to chat further with the older monks and learn about Buddhism or just sit quietly in the temple for a period of reflection and meditation. The younger monks return from school at 2.30pm and you will spend the next few hours teaching English and helping with their homework. Again, this is a very informal affair and you will probably find you spend a lot of time sitting and chatting!

At 4.30-5pm the monks light the butter lamps and you are very welcome to sit undisturbed in the temple for as long as you want. Whenever you are ready, you can head back to your homestay. The evenings and weekends are your free time and the chance to explore Kandy and its surrounding area.

Accommodation

Your will be staying with a local family, just a short tuk-tuk ride from the temple. You will have your own room in their house, which is a fantastic opportunity to truly experience the Sri Lankan culture. Better still, you will enjoy delicious home cooked meals and learn some cooking skills to take home and impress your family and friends!

Project Location

The Buddhist temple is situated in the suburbs of Kandy, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Sri Lanka and the largest city second to Colombo. Its location in the centre of the island offers excellent transport links, including a fast train to Colombo. 500m above sea level, dense tropical forests shrouded in rolling mist surround the city providing a cooler climate than elsewhere in Sri Lanka. It is the perfect base from which to explore the Central Highlands, a biodiversity hotspot.

Kandy was the last kingdom in Sri Lanka to be ruled by royalty and the Royal Palace sits adjacent to theTemple of the Tooth, home to the sacred tooth of Lord Buddha. In front of the Temple is Kandy lake, which was built in 1807 by the reigning King. The lake is popular with locals and tourist alike, who enjoy boat rides and peaceful walks on the shady banks, with views of the city and hills.

There are numerous attractions in Kandy, but just walking through the city is an experience itself. The hustle and bustle, friendly locals happy to have a chat, the smell of cooking wafting through the streets, vibrant displays of sarees, mouth watering fruit and vegetables for sale in the markets... you will find something to feast your eyes on around each corner!
