Elephant Orphanage

Immerse your self into a complete surrounding of elephants. You will be working with baby elephants, sick and injured elephants and those who are no longer able to return to the wild. This project is for anyone who has a true love for elephants and simply can't get enough of being around them. This project has around 80 elephants therefore there is plenty to do and keep yourself busy from the word go!

 

Project days

Monday to Friday – weekends are free to explore the island.

 

Start/End time

A typical day would start from 7.30am to 4.30pm.

 

Project activities

you will be washing the baby elephants and cleaning the elephant beds (there are many beds!). After your refreshing cup of Ceylon tea immerse back into the rest of the day's work which includes filling up the water tanks, distributing food and  working in the Eco garden and helping to make the medicine for the sick and injured elephants.

 

Project fee

GBP395 for one week and GBP135 for each week thereafter.

Rambukkana.

Local Home stay.

Teaching monks

Volunteers will assist the monks in learning the English language. Volunteers will also have the opportunity to learn meditation (this is an option provided across our projects). In addition to this volunteers will help keep the calming surroundings of the temple clean and tidy. This project will give volunteers the chance to learn about Buddhism and Sri Lankan history as temples divulge much information through various art work in the holy grounds and artefacts.

 

Project days

Monday to Friday – Weekends are free to explore the island.

 

Start/End time

A typical day would be from 8am to 5pm.

 

Project activities

The monks start their day early by meditating & cleaning the temple garden.  Volunteers are required to help the temple premises clean and tidy, getting rid of fallen leaves and flowers.

Once in class volunteers are requested to help teach the monks with English. The younger monk’s classes will be taken first.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to learn more about the history of Buddhism and Sri Lanka at the temple they teach through various literature and paintings.  During the placement volunteers also have the opportunity interact with the local folk who visit the temple and get first-hand experience of the strong Buddhist culture which Sri Lanka embraces.

 

Project fee

GBP225  for one week and GBP110 for each week thereafter.

Are you looking for a worthwhile volunteering challenge that will help others while also drawing on your own life skills? Teaching children in underprivileged schools on the outskirts of Colombo is a way of making a real difference to young people’s lives. As a volunteer, you’ll be working with children from poor backgrounds by helping the teachers to run a range of classes, including art, music, drama, woodwork, English language, and/or home economics. Volunteers will also be able to help young adults with vocational training to equip them with valuable skills, and give extra lessons for students who are lacking in confidence and need a helping hand with their homework.

 

Project days

Monday to Friday – weekends are free to explore the island.

 

Start/End time

a typical day would be from 8am to 4pm.

 

Project activities

Volunteers will be teaching assistants. As there are several classes in each grade, volunteers will be moving to various classes at the end of each period.

Assist the local under privileged youth with confidence building exercises which also includes help with spoken English, interview techniques.  Depending on which day of the week volunteers will help the younger pupils who will be sitting their A/Level, O/Level exams with English.

 

Project fee

The children/youth at the homes as well as the carers are always happy to welcome any help and support volunteers are able to provide. Operating with limited facilities and funds the homes are always under a lot of pressure but strive hard to do their very best for the children. This is why our time and effort will go a long way. Despite the hardships you will always be welcomed by  warm and friendly smiles of the staff and children. Be amazed at how soon they connect with you and visibly experience the positive impact you have on their lives and at the home in general.

Project activities

Help the care workers at the home with the daily tasks such as preparing meals and keeping the place clean and tidy, teach the kids basic English, social skills, play sports, enjoy a sign song, play sport, enjoy a bit of gardening with the kids and help them with their vocational training activities.

Working at the home for the disabled

Volunteers are needed to interact with patience with physical disabilities. Some of the patients at the home despite having friends and family have been long forgotten. Volunteers play a vital role in keeping the patients spirits high and the time spent by volunteers is greatly appreciated. In addition to this volunteers assist in preparing meals for the patients, general housekeeping duties and keeping the home and the surrounding garden area clean. The house keeping duties are not compulsory; the main activity for volunteers is to interact with inmates at the home. Volunteers who are also looking to gain work experience and/or who are qualified in the physio therapy field are always welcome.

Monday to Friday – weekends are free to explore the island.

 

Start/End time

a typical day would be from 10am to 5pm.

 

Project activities

Volunteer will help the care takers in the morning with keeping the home tidy and clean.

 

Volunteer will be interacting with patients which is the main activity of this project, spending time with them. Despite these patients having family, they are long forgotten by their families, and therefore volunteer interaction plays a vital part in their mental and physical well-being.

 

Project fee

Volunteers are required at this project to help the patients at the home with their day to day activities and to assist the ongoing collaboration between the care workers and the patients with the vocational training activities. The patients at the home immensely value the interaction with volunteers.
