Teaching English
Have you mastered the English language? Can you speak, listen, read, write and do you actually comprehend the language? Could you teach others to do the same?
English is extremely important in many 3rd world countries. Chances on finding a good job improve significantly when a person speaks English. There are companies where you must speak English just to come to a job interview.
But speaking English does more. It opens the door to a whole new world, a world rapidly conquering the homes of the Sri Lankan people, both rich and poor. The internet provides a wealth of information, an amazing opportunity to learn, learn about different cultures, different disciplines, find new ideas and so much more. But without English the door to this world is left near shut.
Grab your chance to make a difference
Children in Sri Lanka are taught English when they are still young, but in the rural areas it is very difficult to find highly trained English language teachers.
Hence both local teachers and children alike are eager to be in the presence of a foreigner who brings a wealth of knowledge and a new, interesting way of teaching.
For the local teachers it is a unique chance to better their English and experience different teaching methods. For the children it is the greatest opportunity they will ever have to a better future.
“Teaching these children English is a most amazing experience. The expression ‘giving is the greatest reward’ certainly holds true for this project. To see children of different classes trying to sneak in to the English class said it all!”
What kind of skills do I need for this project
Love to work with children and young people in a different culture and you’ll be fine. Be enthusiastic, patient, imaginative, resourceful, have initiative and be motivated and you will star. Working with children and young people is challenging and ever so rewarding.
You don’t need any teaching experience, but must have a high level of English. Native and near native speakers are therefore preferred.
What exactly will I be doing?
You may find that teaching in a foreign country is very different than what you are used to at home. The textbooks, teaching methods and resources may seem strange at first, but that is the beauty of stepping into a different culture. During your time as volunteer you may be asked to use the available resources but then again you may be asked to come up with new and innovative ways of teaching. Drama, singing, debates, playing games, sport, helping with homework and helping local teachers to improve their English could all be part of your activities.
Placement fee for this amazing project
£395 for 2 weeks, £75 for every week thereafter (why pay to volunteer?).
