If you are a physiotherapist we would especially love you to help with rehabilitation training. Physiotherapists do get priority when booking this project.

Project days:
Monday to Friday – 4 to 8 hours a day (flexible)

Help with or lead physiotheraputic rehabilitation training

Working with youth (14-25); enjoy teaching, games, sports,
 
dancing, drama, singing, gardening and more
Project fee:
£395 for 2 weeks, £75 for every week thereafter

Ibbawala (near Weligama)

Home stay at a local family or at the boarding school

Hellabeem boarding school for physically disabled youth (14-25)

Are you up to the challange? Volunteer now in Sri LankaHellabeem is a boarding school for educational & vocational training and a rehabilitation centre.

The boarding school teaches boys with walking disabilities or locomotive problems who are highly vulnerable, from disadvantaged backgrounds and in the age group of 14 to 25 years.


Girls from the local community are welcomed on short courses and physiotherapy as well.

Disabilities are mostly the result of illness, brain damage, birth trauma, deformations, (partial) spinal lesions, polio, amputations, accidents etc.

Project activities


Teaching physically disabled a trade in Sri LankaHellabeem aims to rehabilitate their students to a level where they can sustain themselves physically.

At the same time students are thaught skills to either find a job or to start their own business.

Five former students recently started their own computer workshops!

At Hellabeem you will find yourself involved in a wide variety of activities. You are welcomed to teach or assist in teaching, help with gardening, participate in some building and maintenance, help with the IT, give a course (like sowing), help the orthopaedic technician making braces and other accessories, participate in singing, dancing and drama and much more.

If you are a physiotherapist (or studying physiotherapy) you will find yourself involved in physiotherputic rehabilitation training combined with any of the other activities you would be involved in normally.

Subjects taught at Hellabeem

At Hellabeem the range of subjects including woodwork, metalworking, broom making, sowing, office skills and creative subjects. The main studies are electronics, computer studies (including hardware and software skills), graphic designs and English language.

Project duration

Volunteering at the project can be done from as little as two weeks (four weeks for physiotherapists) up to 3 months.

Success stories at Hellabeem

Five students that finished their education, Thushara, Tharindu, Tharanga, Rawindra and Ernest, each started their very own business in computers!

Tharanga teaching computer skillsToday they repair electronic equipment, edit photos and teach others how to use computers.

Before these five people were unable to sustain themselves and were a burden on their families.

Now, with the help of Hellabeem their lives have changed beyond recognition.
